Origami, the art of creating various shapes from a single piece of paper, is a pastime that has been enjoyed in Japan since ancient times. Traditional forms such as the Crane and Helmet have their origins in Japan's Muromachi period, in the 1400s and 1500s AD. In the Edo period, between 1603 and 1867, paper printed with a colored pattern, called chiyogami, came to be used for origami. Today, children and adults still enjoy folding chiyogami into a variety of shapes. Click on items in the "Origami" section to download instructions for folding various shapes.
