[Jean Francois Millet / The Gleaners] In the 19th century France, it was one of the rights granted to poor tenant farmers to glean what is barely left in the fields after harvest. It helped them out to their meager income. In this work by Millet, figures of three peasants' wives gleaning in silence are drawn against tall piles of straws in the background. These straw piles symbolize the wealth of the landlord who obtains most of the harvest and makes a contrast against the poverty expressed by the gleaning peasants' wives. Millet, one of the representative artists in the Babizon School, drew the figures of nameless laborers as if they are sculptures of sublime gods with solemn brush touches and wonderfully expressed their sense of presence.
