[53 estaciones de Tokaido (Kawaｓaki)] The 53 Stations of Tokaido were originally published as "ukiyoe" pictures of landscapes and inns as observed by Hiroshige when he travelled while accompanying an official delegation from the Edo government to present horses to the Imperial court in Kyoto. This work depicts a lively scene of people crossing a river to visit Kawasaki Daishi Temple. A bridge originally stood in this location but was frequently washed away by floods. A large flood in 1688 prompted the government to do away with the bridge and replace it with a ferry. Image provision: Adachi Traditional Wood Block Foundation
