Copy Stamp Tool

The Copy Stamp tool specifies the location of the image to be copied, and copies it by dragging. The function of the Copy Stamp tool is simply to copy an image. When retouching images, it is often used to erase dust or dirt. To erase dust or dirt and to make the image look more natural, change the brush size, opacity, or the drawing mode to suit the parts you wish to erase.

1 Opening an image that contains dust or dirt

If you look at the sky in the image carefully, you will see black marks in three locations. Let's erase them.

2 Setting the Stamp Tool

Select the Stamp tool from the toolbox, and set the details of the Stamp tool in the Tool Option bar. You can set the size of the stamp, the drawing mode and the opacity, and you can check or uncheck the adjustments, etc. Make settings as shown in the figure. These settings may make the copy destination look unnatural, depending on the details of the image. In this case, change the mode and opacity.

3 Specifying the image to be copied

Specifying the location of the image to be copied. To specify it, click the mouse while pressing the Alt key. Specify a pattern that is similar to the area that you wish to erase (dirt or black lines in this example). Usually, specify a location close to the areas that you wish to erase. In this image, there is a black line in the cloud areas, so specify the cloud areas to be copied as well.

4 Executing the copy

After you specify the areas to be copied, move the pointer to the portion where there is dirt, and click and drag. When you click and drag, the image to be copied is copied to the location of the pointer. In other words, the dust or dirt is hidden by copying and pasting a portion of the image from another location.

5 Erasing all the dust and dirt

Take the above steps to erase the areas that you want using the Copy Stamp tool.

TIPS:Use the areas to be copied that are similar in color and pattern to the copy destination
The Copy Stamp tool is convenient for erasing unnecessary parts. If you do not look carefully at the areas of the image that you wish to erase, and specify an area to be copied that has a different color and pattern to the destination, the process may not go well.
In the example below, a portion of the sky with a slightly different color was specified for the area to be copied. Please note that the result might look unnatural like this if the color and pattern of the area to be copied is not carefully matched with the copy destination.
Even if the difference is not so conspicuous on the screen, it may be visible when the image is printed or it is enlarged and printed out.
