6. Remove extraneous elements

Now, we will erase extraneous elements. There are a number of tools that we could use. For this purpose, we will use the History Brush and Patch Tools, which are new in Photoshop 7.0. These tools compare portions of an image that have extraneous elements with those that do not. Photoshop then computes these portions, and these tools automatically remove only the extraneous elements, making the tools very handy indeed. The History Brush controls are similar to the Stamp Tools, and the Patch Tool is similar to the Marquee Tools. In this example, we will use the Patch Tool, because both it and the History Brush work the same way in Photoshop, even though they have different controls.
6-1 Select the Patch Tool
Select Patch from the Toolbar, or choose Source in the Option Bar, as shown in the figure below.

6-2. Use the Patch Tool to Erase Extraneous Elements.
The first step is to use the Patch Tool to make a selection. Drag it around the extraneous element to select it.
Next, drag the selection around an area of similar size that does not have the extraneous element in it.
Immediately, the selection will snap back to the initial position, neatly erasing the extraneous element.
