We will save the selected areas of the man's face, the sky and
background using Save Selection in the Select menu. There are several ways of creating a selected area.
You can select any method you like. In this example, we will use the Automatic Selection Tool and Quick
Mask Function to create the selected area. |
 |
First, we will create the selected area of the sky, which has
clear borders and is easy to select, using the Magic Wand Tool. For the area that you wish to select but
couldn't, hold down the Shift key and select it again. The area will be added to the selected area. |
 |
If you finish making an approximate selection, change to the
Quick Mask Mode, and confirm the selected areas. In this mode, the selected areas are filled in red. Adjust
the selected areas using the Paintbrush Tool and Eraser Tool as needed. After the adjustments are done,
change to the Drawing Mode. The selected areas are created. |

 |
We will create a selected area for the man's face. In this section,
we will change to the Quick Mask Mode from the beginning, and use the Paintbrush Tool to create the mask.
It is advisable to use a large brush for the large portions, and to use a small brush for the small portions
such as the borders. Adjust the shading and opacity to create a mask appropriate for the image. |
 |
Select Edit in Drawing Mode for the layered mask, and choose
Inverse from the Select menu to invert the selected area. After the selected area has been inverted, enter "man" for
the name to save it. |
 |
Last, we will create a selected area for the background. The
background is the remnant of the sky and the man's face created in the preceding steps. Let's create it
using the layered mask that has been created.
First, load the selected area of the sky. Select Load Selection from the Select menu, then click the Add to
Selection button in the Load Selection dialog to load the selected area of the man's face and merge the selected
areas of the sky to the selected areas of the man. |
 |
At this time, click Inverse in the Select menu to create a selected
area of the background. Enter "background" as the name of the selection and save it. |
 |
Now the selected areas of the sky,
the man's face and the background are saved. Make sure that the selected areas are in the channel palette. |
