After you have printed the image, identify the areas that would be improved by retouching.
To review the checklist in the section on how to examine a photo that has not been retouched, click on the
following link: |
| |
| |
a. The Sky |
The sky is cloudy, but it is darker than expected. Make the
sky more defined by creating contrast. |
| |
| |
b. The Building, Ground and Suchlike in the Background |
| |
Observe the building, grass and trees, and you will see that
the contrast and tints are insufficient. Emphasize the contrast while considering the balance with the
man at the center of the photo, and increase the saturation to improve the tints. |
| |
| |
c. The Man's Face |
| |
Since the photo was taken against the sun, the background is
bright and the man's face is dark. Make some adjustments to make the man clearer and increase the brightness
appropriately. |
| |
| |
d. Electric Wires in the Background |
| |
There are electric wires in the background, but the photo would
be clearer if they were removed. We will erase the electric wires. |
| |
| |
e. Dirt and Dust |
| |
Since the image was scanned from film, there are many particles
of dirt and dust. Remove them carefully. |
| |
| |
f. Checking the Brightness of the Overall Image |
| |
In this section, we will adjust the man's face, the background
and the sky separately. First, check the histogram to see how the Tone is used in the overall image. This
can be done in two ways: Either via the display in the Levels... command or in the Histogram command itself.
For this demonstration, we will use the histogram in the Levels... command. In checking the histogram,
you will find that the tone on the Shadow side is not used. It is advisable to increase the Shadow level
to make the adjustments. |
| |
g. Checking the tints in the overall image |
| |
Next, we will check if there are any tints in the overall image.
Using Hue and Saturation, we can spot even slight tints by raising the saturation to bring out the tint
at its extreme level. Let's perform this process. There are slight tints in the cap, the ground and the
background. Perform the adjustments thoroughly to bring out the natural color. |

Move the slider for the Saturation to the extreme right end

It is easy to tell what sort of tint is present |
