Items Necessary for Retouching
If you are viewing this site, you already have two of the items necessary for retouching: a computer and a monitor. In addition, you will need retouching software. The overwhelming choice of professionals is Adobe Photoshop, which is usually just referred to as Photoshop. Photoshop will be the term used throughout this site.

Next, you will need a printer. You will use the printer not only for printing the finished product, but to check the image before and during your work. Checking a printed image is better than just relying on the monitor image.

To print exceptional pictures, you will also need a high quality glossy photo-grade printing paper, such as “Pro Photo Paper” or “Super Photo Paper.

To use a computer and software for retouching photographs, you'll need to work with digital photographs. In order to do this, you’ll need a digital camera or a scanner.

This concludes the list of necessary tools. However, since you are trying the make the best possible prints, there are additional steps that will improve the work environment. Your monitor should be calibrated and shaded from light that might change the apparent color. For this, a hood or shade is necessary to prevent overhead light from reaching the monitor screen. In addition, “color standard fluorescent lamps” (called “high color rendering fluorescent lamps”) are highly recommended.
