3. Duplicating and overlapping layers

3-1 Duplicating layers
In order to emphasize the feel of an image appearing blurred, it is necessary to stagger duplicate images. In the “Layers” palette, drag the “Background” layer down to the “Create new layer” button. This duplicates the “Background” layer and a layer titled “Background copy” is created.

3-2 Staggering duplicated layers
Use the “Movement Tool” to drag the screen down and to the left. This will move the duplicate layer created in step “3-1.”

3-3 Deleting unnecessary areas
Due to having staggered the channels, a blue area becomes visible in the upper left hand corner of the moved layer. Select the “Marquee Tool” from the Tool Box, highlight the right side of the “Background copy” layer and delete it by pressing the “Delete” key.

3-4 Reducing opacity levels
From the “Select” menu, select “None” to clear any selected areas. In the “Layers” palette, check that the “Background copy” layer is selected and set the “Opacity” to “25%.” This makes the duplicate layer fainter. It is best to set the Opacity of the Background copy layer to your preferred value while observing the effect.

3-5 Trimming unnecessary areas
Select the “Cutting Tool” from the Tool Box. Drag a box from the upper left to the lower right in order to select the area that you wish to keep. The area to be deleted will then be displayed in a darker color. It is possible to adjust the selected area by dragging the points at each corner. Once the area is determined, complete the operation by pressing the “Enter” key and the image will be trimmed.
