Quick & cool TOP
1. Create a marble texture.

1-1 Preparing a new document
In order to work on a picture it is necessary to create a new document. From the “File” menu, select “New” and choose the appropriate settings using the dialogue box that appears. In the example, the “Width” has been set to “297mm,” “Height” to “210mm” and “Resolution” to “300pixel/inch,” but you can set whatever sizes you desire. Set the “Mode” to “RGB color” and the “Contents” to “White” and click the “OK” button.

1-2 Setting default foreground and background colors
In order to create a marble image in the color of your choice, it is necessary to work in black and white to start with.
Click on the “Default foreground and background colors” button at the bottom of the Tool Box. Check that the “Foreground Color” has been set to “Black” and the “Background Color” to “White.”

1-3 Applying the Cloud Pattern 1 filter
From the “Filter” menu, select “Foreground” and then “Cloud Pattern 1.” The image will turn into a randomly mottled black and white pattern.

1-4 Applying the Cloud Pattern 2 filter
Next, select “Foreground” and then “Cloud Pattern 2” from the “Filter” menu. The image will turn into a mottled pattern that appears cracked.

1-5 Selecting level compensation
To get that special cracked marble effect, it is necessary to increase the contrast on the image.
From the “Image” menu, select “Color compensation” and then “level compensation.” A “Level compensation” dialogue box will appear.

1-6 Making the image lighter
In the dialogue box there are three “Input level” boxes for values to be entered. Enter “130” in the left hand box. Do not click on the “OK” button just yet. As you work, the image will become lighter.

1-7 Emphasizing the cracked pattern
Next, in the middle on of the boxes, enter “3” and click “OK.” The image’s cracked pattern will be emphasized.

1-8 Creating a new layer
Next, in order to recreate a realistic marble effect, it is necessary to add a mottled pattern on top.
From the “Layer” menu, select “New” and then “Layer.” Click “OK” without altering anything. “Layer 1” will be created on top of the “Background” layer.

1-9 Applying the Cloud Pattern 1 filter
After checking that the “Foreground Color” is set to “Black” and the “Background Color” to “White,” select “Foreground” and then “Cloud Pattern 1” from the “Filter” menu.

1-10 Changing the foreground mode for Layer 1
After checking that “Layer 1” is selected on the Layers palette, set the “Foreground Mode” to “Hard Light.”
This will produce an effect whereby the mottled pattern on the newly created “Layer 1” is reflected, as if being lit up by a spotlight, onto the cracked patter you created before as the cracked and mottled patters overlap.

1-11 Creating a new layer
In order to recreate the heavy feeling of marble, it is necessary to further overlap the mottled and cracked patterns to add a sense of depth.
From the “Layer” menu, select “New” and then “Layer.” Click “OK” without altering anything. “Layer 2” will be created on top of the “Layer 1.”

1-12 Creating another cracked pattern
After checking that “Layer 2” is selected in the Layers palette, repeat steps “1-3” to “1-7” in order to create a new “cracked pattern.”

1-13 Changing the foreground mode for Layer 2
To give the image a sense of depth by overlapping cracked patterns, first check that “Layer 2” is selected in the Layers palette, then set the “Foreground Mode” to “Soft Light.” This creates unevenness in the contrast between the light and dark of the overlapped patterns.

1-14 Creating a new layer
To overlap another mottled pattern, select “New” and then “Layer” from the “Layer” menu. Click “OK” without altering anything. “Layer 3” will be created on top of the “Layer 2”

1-15 Editing the mottled pattern
After checking that “Layer 3” is selected in the Layers palette, repeat steps “1-9” to “1-10.”
In order to effectively create a sense of depth by overlapping the mottled and cracked patterns, it is necessary to set the foreground modes for each individual layer.

1-16 Combining the layers into one
To combine the 4 layers that you have created so far into one single layer, select “Merge Images” from the “Layer” menu.

1-17 Changing the color
From the “Image” menu, select “Color Compensation” and then “Hue/Saturation.” In the dialogue box that appears, check the box marked “Integrate Colors” and set the “Hue,” "Saturation” and “Brightness.” To make the marble effect a brown color, set the “Hue” to “32,” the “Saturation” to “19” and the “Brightness” to “-15.” You can choose whatever color you will bring out, and set the desired values for each item. After you have finished the settings, click “OK.”

1-18 Saving the marble image
Select “Save” from the “File” menu, and save the marble image you have created. The file name and format used in the example are “marble.psd” and “Photoshop” respectively.
