When taking pictures
of people, you must be especially careful about the background.
A post or tree growing out of the subject's head, or a busy
background is unsightly and can ruin an otherwise good photograph.
Look for the simplest possible background.

If there is a horizontal
line in the background, make sure it is level and doesn't cross
near the subject's face. Problems caused by the background are
obvious when a picture is printed, but difficult to see when taking
the picture. Take care.
The line cuts the
subject's throat.
Camera position changed
to move the line down and out of the way.
What is required is
to make a habit of checking the background again in the viewfinder
(or LCD monitor) just before releasing the shutter, and correcting
any faults before releasing the shutter. Be sure to check for any
of the following three items.
