People are essentially vertical; that is, they are taller than
they are wide. When taking pictures of people, especially portraits, the vertical format feels most natural
and is usually the most appropriate, but simply flipping the camera from horizontal to vertical is not
enough. The vertical, or portrait, format has its own rules of composition and background.

are two versions of the same basic picture, one in horizontal format and the other in vertical format.
Which format do you think works best? |

Pictures of groups of people require different framing, depending
on the number of people. Vertical usually works best for a couple, but horizontal usually is called for
if there are three or more people. Slanted framing can be used to impart motion, but the direction and
angle of the slant is critical and it takes a good bit of practice to get it right. |
