Using a Wide-Angle Lens

One of the characteristics of a wide-angle lens is the ability to shoot over a wide range. Shooting over a wide range means that everything in the photo comes out small. When photographing a person with a wide-angle lens, the subject tends to be diminutive in the photo, so it is recommended that you stand closer to the subject when taking a commemorative photo with a wide-angle lens. You can achieve some interesting results if you photograph your subject at close range with a wide-angle lens. By combining the large subject with an expansive background, you can give perspective to the photo.

Photo utilizing the effect of emphasizing perspective

It is difficult to photograph a person because of the strong distortion. If you make good use of these characteristics, however, you will be able to take an impressive photo by taking advantage of the distortion and perspective.

The photo is more impressive if a wide-angle lens is used.

The photos below were taken with a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens so that the subjects are the same size in the same location. In the photo taken with a wide-angle lens, the mountains in the background are expansive. In the photo taken with a telephoto lens, only part of the mountains in the background appears. In the example of the photo taken with the wide-angle lens, the subjects were photographed at close range so that they appeared larger.

Another characteristic of a wide-angle lens is a large depth of field (range of focus). In the case of a camera capable of manual photography, if the aperture is set to a large value, such as f16 and f22, you can take a photo that is in focus over an extended range from close up to far away. In the case of a compact camera, setting the mode to the landscape mode () achieves the same effect.

Since a photo taken with a wide-angle lens has an expansive background and an extended range of focus, it is possible to include a large amount of information in the photo, such as the location and the situation. On the other hand, there is also the possibility of including many unnecessary elements in the photo. The result may be a photo in which the main subjects are lost in the complicated background and become less conspicuous. When taking a photo with a wide-angle lens, pay special attention to the background.
