Shooting
a photo without looking at the viewfinder is a way of shooting at random, and many precious shots may be
wasted. Therefore, it was not common to photograph in this way when using film cameras. However, you can
regard this as one of the interesting techniques for digital cameras. If your digital camera has a display
monitor on the back, you can try as many times as you like without being afraid of making mistakes, while
looking at the composition to some extent.
If you shoot a photo of short
objects, such as children and pets, from a lower level, you can get a good photo and their
expressions will be clearer. It is difficult to hold the camera at low level while chasing
after a child that is moving around. Try the no-viewfinder technique in this case: Hold the
camera at a lower level on its own, and follow the subjects while checking the composition
and their expressions in the LCD monitor on the back. It is a new and different world from
the one viewed from your height. |

Hold the camera at a lower level like this,
and move with the subject together (Look ahead carefully.) |

| Too far. |
The dog has moved off in an unexpected direction. |

| The photo was taken with the movement of the
running dog. |

Shoot a photo at a low angle without lying in the
snow. (Be sure to have a strap around your wrist.)

The secret
of the no-viewfinder technique is to use the wide angle as much as possible. The wide-angle lens covers
a broad range enables you to shoot an object at close range. Also, a long depth of field, which is one
of the characteristics of a wide-angle lens, is suitable for shooting without using the viewfinder. Compact
digital cameras are suitable for the no-viewfinder technique as well, because their range of focus is deep.
As you need to get used to this
technique, it may take some time before you get a good photo. Even if are used to this technique,
the success rate is low. However, when you are successful, you have a photo that could not
have been taken in the normal way. To prevent the camera from falling if your hand slips,
be sure to have a strap around your wrist irrespective of whether you use a single-lens reflex
camera or a compact camera. |
