Camera lenses are roughly divided into three focusing ranges:
Wide-angle, standard, and telephoto. In the 35mm format, a lens with a focal length of approximately 50
mm is called standard lens. Lenses with smaller focal lengths are called wide-angle lenses, while lenses
with larger focal lengths are telephoto lenses.
You can select the focal length according to the subject, the situation, and the type of
photo you want to take. A zoom lens enables you can change the focal range of the lens without
changing the lens itself. The photos below indicate how the scenery in the photo changes
according to a focal length ranging from 16 mm to 600 mm. |

When
using a 16mm wide-angle lens, the angle of view is very wide at approximately 107º. Therefore,
objects in the distance come out very small and you can give perspective to the photo. On the other
hand, the angle of view for a 600mm telephoto lens is very small at 4º (sensor), and objects
in the distance appear as if they were right in front of you.
A wide-angle lens with a focal length of less than 20 mm is called super wide-angle,
and a telephoto with a focal length of 400 mm or more is called super telephoto.
The characteristics of the focal lengths become more pronounced, so you can take
a unique photo by taking advantage of them. |

In the photos below, the lens was changed from a wide-angle
to a telephoto while the photographer gradually moved backward to preserve the size of the person. For
the photo taken at close range with a 28mm wide-angle lens, the face is distorted because the nose close
to the lens comes out larger and the hair and the outline of the face are smaller due to the strong perspective.
Even with a 50mm standard lens, it is clear that there is still distortion when a photo is taken at such
close range. With a 200mm telephoto lens, the photo has no distortion. |

 |
| In
the above examples, an important point other than distortion is that the background is extensive
and appears relatively sharp in the case of the wide-angle lens, but in the case of a telephoto lens,
the background is blurred and is only partially visible, so that the subject stands out. As a result,
it is clear that you can take a photo with little distortion and a simple background by utilizing
a telephoto lens, and when taking a person using a camera equipped with a zoom lens. |
