After hearing about "Mother's Day," Mrs. John Bruce Dodd in Washington state suggested that they also designate "Father's Day" on June 19, 1909 (third Sunday of the month). Her father was a man who raised all six children on his own after his wife passed away. In 1916, celebrating this day became popular throughout the U.S. and it officially was considered a holiday in 1972.
