A folk tale in the Netherlands tells of a girl turned into a tulip. When three different knights asked for the girl's hand in marriage, she was unable to choose one and asked a fairy to turn her into a flower. The story says that the crown, sword, and gold given to the girl by the three knights were turned into the flower's petals, leaves, and bulb, respectively.
