The prairie dog is a mammal belonging to the Sciuridae family of the Rodentia order, that lives mostly in the North American prairies. They are called “prairie dogs” because of the barking alarm call they use to alert other prairie dogs when their natural predators approach. They are polygamous, with many females per male, and form family groups called “coteries,” that live together in large underground burrow.
