It is a well-known fact that the first American Shorthair cats were brought to America by the Puritans coming from England on the Mayflower in 1620. These cats were brought on the ship for the purpose of protecting the food and clothing from mice. (In those days, the cats were called ‘Shorthairs’.) From then, their breeding continued and by the early 1900s, they were well-established as household pets. To differentiate them from other shorthairs, their name was then changed to ‘Domestic Shorthair’, but soon after this renaming their popularity quickly declined. In 1965, their name was changed again, and that is when they came to be called ‘American Shorthair’. In terms of characteristics, the American Shorthair has a large body and sturdy shape compared to European cats. Their coats come in many varieties of hair colors, but the most popular type is the silver base with black stripes. The hair in their coat is short and thick, which protects them from humidity, coldness, and injuries. In addition to their gentle and loving temperament, they are very curious and independent, and these traits make them resilient and adaptable to any environment.
