In the wild, most stag beetles have a dark brown/blackish colored body. The males have large and distinctive mandibles which they use when fighting with other beetles. Stag beetles are largely nocturnal, hiding in the hollows of trees during the day. Despite their large bodies, they are actually very timid and will hide as soon as they sense danger. They almost never fly.
