[Wind God and Thunder God - Thunder God]This paper relief depicts the thunder god from "Wind God and Thunder God," a Japanese national treasure artwork created by Tawaraya Sōtatsu in the early seventeenth century. Wind God and Thunder God (Thunder God) portrays the thunder god standing on a storm cloud, powerfully striking a drum as he looks down on the world below. The work features a gold leaf background, and was created using the technique known as "tarashikomi" with silver leaf and India ink. The clouds give the feeling of limitless space. It is a unique work which leaves viewers with a very powerful impression.
