[Pierre August Renoir / Dance Hall of Moulin de la Galette, Montmartre] This artwork expresses the atmosphere of Montmartre in Paris in the 1870s. Moulin de la Galette was a very popular dance hall in those days, built under an abandoned windmill (Moulin) on the hill of Montmartre. The dance halls and cabarets in Montmartre attracted not only laborers, students and poor artists living in cheap Montmartre area but many other Parisians as well. This artwork skillfully expresses the liveliness of such amusement quarters. This painting of an outdoor dance hall with soft, quick touches is not only a representative artwork of Renoir but one of the masterpieces of the early impressionist arts.
