[100 views of Edo - Suijin Shrine and Massaki on the Sumida River] The 100 views of Edo (the present day Tokyo), depicting scenes of the inner city and outlying areas, were one of the later collections of the "ukiyoe" painter Utagawa Hiroshige. The collection, which is divided into four parts according to the four seasons, is an epic work comprising a catalog and 119 pictures. Containing numerous innovative picture compositions, this collection also exerted a major influence on Western painters as a representative example of the "Japonisme" movement. The blue hues of Mount Tsukuba in the distance and the colors of the blooming cherry blossoms in the foreground make "Suijin Shrine and Massaki on the Sumida River" a work of exquisite beauty.
