[100 views of Edo - Suido Bridge and Surugadai] The 100 views of Edo (the present day Tokyo), depicting scenes of the inner city and outlying areas, were one of the later collections of the "ukiyoe" painter Utagawa Hiroshige. The collection, which is divided into four parts according to the four seasons, is an epic work comprising a catalog and 119 pictures. Containing numerous innovative picture compositions, this collection also exerted a major influence on Western painters as a representative example of the "Japonisme" movement. "Suido Bridge and Surugadai" is a work so full of energy that it makes us feel even today that the giant carp streamer protruding beyond the picture's edge is about to move.
